Sensing triumph within her grasp, Eartha waited till darkness before creeping up to the allotment to steal a bucket of Percy’s compost. Unfortunately for Eartha, the pub landlord had recognized her by the large mole on the end of her nose and eavesdropped on her conversation with the simpleton. He alerted Percy to his suspicions and Percy devised a cunning ruse. He sped to his allotment, plucked Duff from the puddle of manure spillage, and planted him alongside the compost heap of Hulk Heaver, a neighbouring plot holder who specialized in the cultivation of Bonsai plants.
